Former President Bill Clinton was discharged from the hospital on Tuesday, just one day after being admitted for the flu, according to his office.

In a statement, Clinton’s office said, “President Clinton was discharged earlier today after being treated for the flu. He and his family are deeply grateful for the exceptional care provided by the team at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital and are touched by the kind messages and well wishes he received. He sends his warmest wishes for a happy and healthy holiday season to all.”

Clinton, 78, was admitted to the hospital on Monday afternoon for testing and observation after developing a fever.

Since leaving office nearly 25 years ago, Clinton has faced several health challenges. In 2004, he underwent quadruple bypass heart surgery, and the following year, he experienced a partially collapsed lung. In 2010, he had another heart procedure to insert two stents into a coronary artery.

In 2021, he was hospitalized for six days in Los Angeles for a urological infection that spread to his bloodstream.

Clinton, who spoke at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago this past August, has remained active on the campaign trail and with book promotions. He has kept a busy travel schedule following the release of his new book, Citizen: My Life After the White House.

Flu cases are rising across the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Flu-related hospitalizations have doubled over the past two weeks, and the CDC reports nearly 2 million illnesses, 23,000 hospitalizations, and 970 deaths from the flu this season.

Individuals over the age of 65 are particularly at risk for severe flu-related complications.
