High winds and the threat of sandstorms led to widespread disruptions in Beijing on Saturday, with hundreds of flights canceled and public parks closed. The intense gales knocked down numerous trees, damaging cars and older homes throughout China’s capital. By 2:00 p.m., Beijing’s two major international airports, Beijing Capital and Daxing, had canceled 693 flights, and more cancellations were expected as severe weather continued, particularly in northern and coastal areas of the country.

Other parts of China also saw flight and train cancellations, with some regions experiencing the strongest winds in over 75 years, reaching speeds of up to 148 kph (92 mph). In Beijing, the Universal Studios theme park remained closed at least until Sunday, while historic sites like the Forbidden City, Summer Palace, and Temple of Heaven were shut down. Outdoor events, including football matches, were also postponed.

These high winds and sandstorms are common in China’s dry northern regions, where the Gobi and Taklamakan Deserts are located. For decades, China has worked to mitigate the effects of sandstorms, which are particularly troublesome in Beijing. The storms can severely reduce visibility, send sand into buildings and clothing, and cause significant discomfort to people’s eyes, noses, and ears.
