Miami Dolphins offensive lineman Bayron Matos sustained an injury near the end of Wednesday’s practice and was transported by helicopter to a hospital. The team described his condition as stable but did not disclose the nature of the injury.
The incident occurred in the final moments of the first day of the Dolphins’ training camp. Matos, a second-year offensive tackle, was quickly airlifted for medical evaluation.
“It’s a really heartbreaking part of the game,” said Dolphins lineman Austin Jackson. “Very tough.”
Matos, originally from Los Mina in Santo Domingo, was not selected in the 2024 NFL Draft but joined the Dolphins as a free agent through the NFL’s International Player Pathway Program, which provides opportunities for athletes from outside the U.S. to compete in the league.
Over the past year, Matos spent time on Miami’s practice squad before signing a reserve/future contract in January. He has yet to appear in an official NFL game.
Before football, the 24-year-old was a two-sport athlete, playing basketball and baseball in his youth. Remarkably, he only began playing football in 2022 and walked on to the University of South Florida football team without any previous experience in the sport.
