Tragedy struck during Sunday’s UEFA Nations League final in Munich when a spectator fell from an upper level of the stadium, landing near the media section below. The fan died at the scene despite emergency efforts.
According to Munich police spokesperson Tobias Schenk, the man fell from the middle tier onto a staircase close to the press area. Authorities responded swiftly, launching an investigation into what is currently being treated as a tragic accident. “Criminal police are on site, witnesses are being questioned, and video footage is under review,” Schenk said. “There is no indication of foul play.”
The incident occurred during the first half of extra time, at a moment when the match was particularly tense and emotions in the crowd were running high. Nearby fans were visibly shaken and quickly alerted emergency responders. Security and police cordoned off the area while medics worked to revive the man, using a tarp to shield the scene from view. Despite their efforts, he could not be saved.
Police confirmed the man was from the Garmisch-Partenkirchen region in Bavaria but offered no further details.
The match continued and ultimately ended with Portugal winning in a penalty shootout. In their post-match press conferences, both team coaches expressed their condolences.
“Before we begin, I want to offer my deepest sympathies. A fan lost his life today in the stands,” said Spain’s coach, Luis de la Fuente. “My thoughts are with his family.”
Portugal’s coach, Roberto Martínez, also addressed the loss: “We are deeply saddened by the passing of the fan. It’s heartbreaking news.”
