“Lilo & Stitch” and “Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning” continued to lead the box office following a record-breaking Memorial Day weekend. Several new films also premiered across theaters in the U.S. and Canada, including Sony’s family-friendly “Karate Kid: Legends” and the A24 horror film “Bring Her Back.” According to studio estimates on Sunday, the post-holiday weekend generated a strong $149 million, marking a more than 120% increase compared to the same period last year.

Disney’s live-action/animation hybrid “Lilo & Stitch” retained first place with $63 million from 4,410 locations across North America. This haul pushed it past “Sinners” to become the year’s second-highest grossing film domestically, with $280.1 million in ticket sales. Worldwide, its total stands at $610.8 million. Meanwhile, “Sinners” continued its solid run into its seventh weekend, adding $5.2 million and bringing its domestic total to $267.1 million and $350.1 million globally.

The eighth installment of the “Mission: Impossible” franchise held on to second place, earning $27.3 million from 3,861 theaters. Like “Lilo & Stitch,” this represented a 57% drop from its opening weekend. With $122.6 million made domestically, the movie’s performance aligns with previous series entries. However, with a hefty production budget reportedly around $400 million, it still faces a steep climb toward profitability. Internationally, it added $76.1 million—including $25.2 million from China, where it just opened—bringing its global total to $353.8 million.

Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at Comscore, commented, “This year is about long-term playability. Word of mouth and steady holds are more valuable than just opening weekend numbers.”

Among new releases, Sony’s “Karate Kid: Legends” led with an estimated $21 million from 3,809 venues. The film reunites Jackie Chan and Ralph Macchio to train a young kung fu prodigy named Li Fong (played by Ben Wang). Chan previously starred in the 2010 reboot of the original 1984 movie, while Macchio has gained new fans through the popular “Cobra Kai” series, which recently wrapped its sixth season. Though reviews were mixed, audiences responded well with a strong A- CinemaScore and 4.5 stars on PostTrak. With a production budget of roughly $45 million and several weeks before another family film hits theaters, the film’s prospects look promising. It opened earlier overseas and has amassed $47 million worldwide so far.

In fourth place, “Final Destination: Bloodlines” brought in $10.8 million during its third weekend, making it the highest-grossing film in the franchise (not accounting for inflation) with $229.3 million globally.

Rounding out the top five was “Bring Her Back,” which earned $7.1 million from 2,449 screens. The horror film stars Sally Hawkins as a foster mother with sinister intentions and was made by twins Danny and Michael Philippou, who also directed the 2023 hit “Talk to Me.” The movie earned a rare B+ CinemaScore for the horror genre and remains the only new horror release until “28 Years Later” arrives on June 20.

A new Wes Anderson film, “The Phoenician Scheme,” opened in New York and Los Angeles this weekend, making $270,000. It will expand nationwide next weekend.

The summer box office outlook remains optimistic, though there’s still a long road to the $4 billion target—a pre-pandemic standard surpassed only by the “Barbenheimer” phenomenon last summer. May is projected to close with $973 million, a 75% increase over May 2024, according to Comscore data.
