Cardinal Kevin Farrell, the Vatican camerlengo, made the announcement of Pope Francis’ passing on Monday from the chapel of the Domus Santa Marta, where the Pope had resided. He was joined by Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican secretary of state, Archbishop Edgar Peña Parra, substitute chief of staff, and Archbishop Diego Ravelli, the master of liturgical ceremonies.

“Dear brothers and sisters, it is with great sadness that I announce the death of our Holy Father, Pope Francis. At 7:35 this morning, the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the Father’s house. His life was entirely devoted to the service of the Lord and His Church.

“He taught us how to live the values of the Gospel with unwavering faith, courage, and universal love, particularly for the poorest and most marginalized. With profound gratitude for his example as a true disciple of the Lord Jesus, we entrust the soul of Pope Francis to God’s infinite merciful love, One and Triune.”
