Kyren Lacy, a former LSU wide receiver who had been facing criminal charges related to a fatal car crash in December, has died at the age of 24, according to a spokesperson from the university’s athletic department.

While LSU confirmed Lacy’s passing, the cause of death was not disclosed. A family member reported that Lacy died in the Houston area.

Houston police directed all inquiries to the Harris County Medical Examiner’s office, which had not provided a response as of Sunday.

Originally from Thibodaux, Louisiana, Lacy led LSU in touchdown receptions last season with nine. He had declared for this month’s NFL Draft, but his prospects took a significant hit after being linked to a deadly accident in Lafourche Parish.

Authorities allege that Lacy was driving recklessly—speeding and passing in a no-passing zone—when another driver swerved to avoid his Dodge Charger and ended up in a fatal head-on collision. The victim, 78-year-old Herman Hall of Thibodaux, later died at a hospital.

According to Louisiana State Police Troop C, Lacy left the scene without offering assistance. He was later charged with negligent homicide, felony hit-and-run, and reckless vehicle operation.

Lacy played in 12 games during the past season, finishing second on the team with 58 receptions and 866 receiving yards. He announced his intent to enter the NFL Draft just days after the crash and did not participate in LSU’s Texas Bowl win over Baylor on December 31.
