The Philadelphia Union announced the tragic passing of goalkeeper Holden Trent on Saturday at the age of 25. While the cause of death has not been disclosed, his family had recently reported that he was in the intensive care unit.
In a statement, his family shared, “Holden passed away this afternoon surrounded by his family and friends. We are deeply moved by the outpouring of love for Holden, and details regarding services and a celebration of his life will be shared soon.”
Born on July 7, 1999, in Greensboro, North Carolina, Trent attended Page High School and went on to play at High Point University, where he earned recognition as the Big South Goalkeeper of the Year in both 2021 and 2022. He was selected by the Union as the 28th pick in the 2023 MLS Super Draft.
Major League Soccer expressed its condolences following the tragic death of Philadelphia Union goalkeeper Holden Trent. In a statement, the league stated, “MLS stands with the Philadelphia Union and the entire soccer community in mourning Holden Trent’s passing. A talented young goalkeeper with a promising future, Trent demonstrated unwavering determination and professionalism every day while being part of the tight-knit goalkeeping team at Philadelphia.”
“We offer our heartfelt condolences to his fiancée, family, friends, teammates, and the entire Philadelphia Union community. MLS is working with the club to ensure that players and their families have access to the support and resources they need during this difficult time.”
The Union also issued a statement expressing their sorrow:
“The Philadelphia Union is heartbroken by the loss of Holden Trent. While he was an exceptional player and a fierce competitor, he was even more importantly a devoted son, brother, fiancé, and teammate who inspired those around him. He truly embodied determination, dedication, and perseverance, and he will be greatly missed. We extend our deepest sympathies to his family, fiancée, and friends,” the statement read.
“To honor Holden’s friends and family, there will be no additional statements released at this time. We kindly request that their privacy be respected as they go through this period of mourning.”
