At this year’s CinemaCon in Las Vegas, Sony Pictures made a major announcement, showcasing their upcoming slate of films, including a groundbreaking biopic series about The Beatles. The studio revealed that four separate films would tell the band’s story, each from the perspective of one of its legendary members: John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr.
During their presentation at Caesars Palace, Sony unveiled the lead actors for each role: Paul Mescal will portray McCartney, Joseph Quinn will play Harrison, Barry Keoghan will take on Starr, and Harris Dickinson will embody Lennon. Director Sam Mendes, who has long been trying to make a Beatles-related project, confirmed that all four films are set to premiere in April 2028. He described the series as a “first binge-able theatrical experience,” indicating that audiences will be able to enjoy the entire saga in one sitting.
In addition to the Beatles news, the presentation also included other big announcements from Sony, including a new trailer for Danny Boyle’s highly anticipated sequel, 28 Years Later, a follow-up to his 2002 film 28 Days Later, set to hit theaters this June. Sony also teased the upcoming Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, the third film in the Spider-Verse animated trilogy.
Sony’s CEO, Tom Rothman, encouraged theater owners to think outside the box and offer weekday discounts to attract more viewers. Meanwhile, executive Adam Bergerman argued that films should remain in theaters for longer periods to maximize their impact and revenue.
The convention comes at a time when Hollywood is trying to bounce back from a slow box office start to 2025, which has seen an 11% drop in sales compared to last year and nearly a 40% decrease from 2019. However, with a stronger release schedule ahead and fresh initiatives from studios like Sony, there’s hope for a recovery.
