The federal government has fined American Airlines $50 million, after a multi- agency investigation found multiple violations of rules for passengers with disabilities, particularly those designed to protect passengers who use wheelchairs.
Between 2019 and 2023, an investigation by the US Department of Transportation and the Civil Rights Division of the Justice Department found American Airlines to have “serious violations” of the rights of passengers with disabilities.
Speaking on this issue, Transport Secretary Pete Buttigieg spoke to reporters. He said American Airlines did not properly handle thousands of wheelchairs and did not provide adequate assistance to passengers with disabilities, which created safety concerns for passengers and caused them great suffering.
“One disabled passenger told us, ‘I’ve been treated like luggage, so I don’t travel anymore,'” Buttigieg explained. He added, “Air travel complaints from passengers with disabilities will no longer be tolerated, and action will be taken.”
This penalty is the largest of its kind. Under the order, American Airlines will have to use $25 million of the $50 million fine as “credits” to invest in reducing wheelchair damage and improving infrastructure. If the American does not comply with this condition, the remaining $25 million fine will also be imposed on them.
American Airlines said in a statement that it has spent $175 million to improve wheelchair and scooter handling this year alone, improving its service by 20% from 2022.
“Despite such improvements, there may still be service interruptions or damage to passenger equipment,” American explained. The company said it takes all such complaints and claims seriously and is constantly working to address them.
