McLaren’s Oscar Piastri claimed his first-ever pole position in Formula One ahead of Sunday’s Chinese Grand Prix, posting two fast laps that secured the top spot on the grid.

Piastri, who finished second in Saturday’s Sprint race, will start from pole, hoping to improve on that result in the main event. He will be joined on the front row by Mercedes’ George Russell.

McLaren teammate Lando Norris, who led the first two qualifying segments (Q1 and Q3), will start from third. However, Norris made some mistakes during his final lap and pitted, which left him behind Piastri. He starts ahead of Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, who took fourth place.

Chinese Sprint race winner Lewis Hamilton will start fifth, driving for Ferrari, followed by his teammate Charles Leclerc.

The 56-lap Chinese Grand Prix is set to begin at 3 pm local time (0700 GMT).
