Tomas Machac, the eighth seed, claimed his first ATP title on Saturday by defeating Alejandro Davidovich Fokina 7-6 (6), 6-2 in the final of the Mexican Open.

The 24-year-old Czech player became the third Czech to win an ATP 500 event since the category was introduced in 2009, joining Jiri Lehecka and Kiri Vesely.

As a result of this win, Machac has entered the top 20 in the ATP rankings for the first time, becoming the first Czech player to do so since Tomas Berdych in June 2018.

This victory came after a loss in his previous final at Geneva, where he was beaten by Casper Ruud last year.

For Davidovich Fokina, this marked his second consecutive final loss in a month, having been defeated by Miomir Kecmanovic in Delray Beach earlier in February.
