Ugandan athlete Jacob Kiplimo set a new world record for the men’s half-marathon on Sunday, becoming the first runner to complete the distance in under 57 minutes. The 24-year-old finished the race in 56 minutes and 41 seconds during a road race in Barcelona, breaking the previous record of 57:30 set by Ethiopian runner Yomif Kejelcha in Valencia last year.
Kiplimo’s performance represents the largest single improvement in the men’s half-marathon record. The ideal weather conditions, with a temperature of 13°C (55°F) and no wind, played a significant role in his achievement. Kiplimo, who won a bronze medal in the 10,000 meters at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, has now added this remarkable feat to his list of accomplishments.
