Sweden’s Prince Carl Philip and Princess Sofia have announced the birth of their fourth child, a daughter.
The baby, whose name and photo have not been revealed, was born on Friday in Stockholm. The royal couple shared that she weighs 3,645 grams (8 lbs) and is 49 centimeters (19 inches) long.
Prince Carl Philip, the son of Sweden’s King Carl XVI Gustaf, is fourth in line to the throne. He married Sofia Hellqvist in June 2015. Their new daughter joins her older brothers, Prince Alexander, 8, Prince Gabriel, 7, and Prince Julian, 3.
Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson and the government extended their congratulations to the family.
“We wish the family all the best,” Kristersson said in a statement.
To celebrate the birth, 21-gun salutes were fired across Sweden at noon on Saturday, a royal tradition marking such occasions, according to Swedish news agency TT.
Although King Carl XVI Gustaf is the head of state, his role is purely ceremonial, and he does not hold political power.
Despite the egalitarian nature of Swedish society, the royal family remains highly popular, with the monarchy enjoying broad support.
