Throughout the 2024 season, New York Giants fans have been tormented by seeing Saquon Barkley, their former star running back, play for a rival team heading to Super Bowl 59. However, Barkley did try to lend a hand to his old team in finding a new quarterback — in his own way.
Jameis Winston, the soon-to-be free agent quarterback, is working as a correspondent for Fox Sports Digital ahead of the Super Bowl. On Monday, he attended Super Bowl Opening Night as part of the media. Known for his humor, Winston jokingly asked Barkley which team he thought should sign him in free agency. Barkley gave a clever response, saying, “I think New York needs a quarterback right now.”
When Winston inquired about which New York team he meant, Barkley replied with, “The Giants.”
Barkley’s comment may have been solid advice, but it also served as a playful dig at the New York Giants, the team that controversially let him go. The running back has taken some lighthearted shots at his former team over the years. During “Hard Knocks: Offseason with the New York Giants,” Giants owner John Mara admitted that he wouldn’t be able to sleep if Barkley ended up with the Philadelphia Eagles. Barkley had some fun with Mara’s words in an Unisom sleep aid commercial, poking fun at the owner’s concerns.
The Giants certainly need to solve their quarterback issue. After parting ways with their franchise quarterback, Daniel Jones, following a lackluster performance, New York struggled to find consistent play at the position, finishing with a poor 3-14 record for the season. While the Giants hold the No. 3 pick in the 2025 draft and could use it to select a quarterback, Jameis Winston might also be a potential option for the team.
