Meta Platforms plans to invest between $60 billion and $65 billion this year to enhance its AI infrastructure, CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced on Friday. This move comes as part of a broader trend among major tech companies making substantial investments to leverage AI technology.

As part of its strategy, Meta will construct a data center exceeding 2 gigawatts, which would be large enough to cover a significant portion of Manhattan. The company, a major consumer of Nvidia’s highly sought-after AI chips, aims to have more than 1.3 million graphics processors by the end of the year.

Zuckerberg emphasized that 2025 will be a pivotal year for AI, stating in a Facebook post, “This is a massive effort, and over the coming years it will drive our core products and business.”

Looking ahead, Zuckerberg anticipates Meta’s AI assistant, which will be integrated across platforms like Facebook and Instagram, to reach over 1 billion users by 2025. Additionally, the company’s open-source AI model, Llama 4, is expected to become a leading, state-of-the-art model in the field.

Meta’s stock rose by 1.6% in early trading. Following the rapid rise of OpenAI’s ChatGPT, which showcased the vast potential of AI, major tech companies have been pouring tens of billions into building AI-related infrastructure.

On Tuesday, U.S. President Donald Trump revealed that OpenAI, SoftBank Group, and Oracle would partner to create a venture called Stargate, investing $500 billion into AI infrastructure across the U.S.

Earlier this month, Microsoft announced plans to invest approximately $80 billion in data centers for fiscal 2025, while Amazon stated that its capital expenditure in 2025 would surpass the estimated $75 billion for 2024.

Meta plans to increase its capital spending to as much as $65 billion, a notable rise from its estimated $38 billion to $40 billion in capital spending last year.

As part of its AI initiatives, the company announced plans to develop an AI engineer that will progressively contribute more code to its research and design projects. Additionally, Meta will continue expanding the teams focused on AI services.
