Angus MacInnes, best known for his memorable but brief role as Gold Leader in the original Star Wars film, has passed away at the age of 77.

His family confirmed the news in a statement, expressing their heartbreak. “Our hearts are broken,” the statement read. “He was at home surrounded by love, and we received tremendous support. We are grateful for all the kind tributes.”

MacInnes’ long-time manager, Suzann Wade, also shared her thoughts, recalling that even during his final month, he remained strong and kept his distinctive sense of humor that could lighten even the darkest times. “I will always cherish his cheeky laugh and his incredible talent as an actor,” Wade said. “We’ve lost a true legend. Rest in peace and rise in glory.”

Angus MacInnes portrayed Jon “Dutch” Vander, the leader of Gold Squadron, in the 1977 Star Wars film. His character played a pivotal role during the iconic Death Star attack sequence, ultimately sacrificing himself in the battle.

Years later, MacInnes made a return to the Star Wars universe in the 2016 prequel, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. In the film, Gold Leader participates in the final battle as the rebels steal the Death Star plans. Rogue One featured archival footage of MacInnes, along with a new voiceover performed by the actor.

In a 2017 interview, MacInnes shared how he was approached for Rogue One and offered a substantial sum to re-record his dialogue. “They asked if I was interested, offered a lot of money, and after taking the cash, I re-voiced the lines,” he recalled. “It was a rather strange experience. Unfortunately, with Carrie Fisher’s passing, I’m the only actor who was ‘brought back to life’ in Rogue One and is still here.”

In addition to his Star Wars role, Angus MacInnes portrayed Judge Silver in the 1995 film Judge Dredd, which starred Sylvester Stallone. His extensive film career also included appearances in Hellboy, Captain Phillips, Eyes Wide Shut, and Superman II.

A Facebook post shared on Monday, signed by Angus MacInnes’ family, expressed that Star Wars fans held a “special place in his heart.”

The post stated, “He loved meeting fans at conventions, hearing your stories, and sharing in your passion for the saga.” It also highlighted how MacInnes was always humbled, delighted, and honored by the admiration and enthusiasm of the fans and the convention community.

“Angus was not just an actor — he was a kind, considerate, and generous person who brought warmth and humor into the lives of everyone he met. He will be profoundly missed by his family, friends, fellow actors, and fans worldwide. His family expresses their heartfelt gratitude to all who supported him.”
