New Year’s Eve fireworks in Newcastle and Gateshead have been cancelled due to severe weather warnings. Two fireworks displays were planned for the Quayside, one at 18:00 GMT and another at midnight, but Newcastle City Council decided to cancel them because of strong, gusty winds that made the event too dangerous.
A spokesperson stated that it was a “tough” decision, but emphasized that “safety always comes first.” They also encouraged people to find safe ways to celebrate the arrival of 2025 with loved ones.
The Met Office has issued a yellow wind warning, valid until 23:00 GMT on Tuesday, advising the public to take extra caution.
The council spokesperson explained, “The forecast clearly shows that going ahead with the event would pose risks to both attendees and our on-site event teams.” They acknowledged the disappointment this decision would cause for both residents and visitors, including those who had traveled to the city.
