Burt, the crocodile famous for his role in the 1980s hit film Crocodile Dundee, has passed away in Australia. He was believed to be over 90 years old at the time of his death. Burt appeared alongside Paul Hogan and Linda Kozlowski in the 1986 movie.

His passing was confirmed by the staff at Crocosaurus Cove in Darwin, where Burt had lived since 2008. The wildlife attraction shared the sad news on Instagram, writing, “It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Burt, the iconic saltwater crocodile and star of the Australian classic Crocodile Dundee.”

In Crocodile Dundee, Mick Dundee (played by Paul Hogan) trades the Australian outback for New York City after meeting American reporter Sue Charlton (Linda Kozlowski), who eventually falls in love with him. Burt the crocodile is famously featured in a scene where Kozlowski’s character is attacked while kneeling beside a creek.

Captured in the 1980s from the Northern Territory’s Reynolds River, Burt was known for his bold personality. Crocosaurus Cove described him as a “confirmed bachelor,” a trait he displayed during his earlier years at a crocodile farm. His fiery temperament earned him the admiration of both his caretakers and visitors, embodying the wild, untamed nature of saltwater crocodiles.

The wildlife centre stated that Burt was “truly one of a kind,” not just a crocodile, but a powerful force of nature and a symbol of the strength and majesty of these incredible creatures.

Burt’s challenging personality was part of what made him so memorable and beloved by those who cared for him, as well as the many visitors who saw him over the years.

The statement from Crocosaurus Cove added that people from all over the world were amazed by his impressive size and commanding presence, particularly during feeding time.

Saltwater crocodiles typically live past 70 years, especially in captivity. To honor Burt, a commemorative sign will be placed at the attraction in his memory.

Crocodile Dundee holds the title of the highest-grossing Australian film of all time, earning $47,707,598 (AUD). The success of the film led to two sequels: Crocodile Dundee II in 1988 and Crocodile Dundee in Los Angeles in 2001.

Paul Hogan and Linda Kozlowski, who starred in the film, married in 1990 but later divorced.

A documentary about the making of the film is set to be released next year.
