Google, Samsung and Qualcomm have decided to come together to launch a mixed- reality (XR) headset. The headset will compete with Apple’s Vision Pro and Meta’s Quest 3. The Samsung- made headset is slated to launch in 2025, but its pricing has yet to be announced. However, according to experts, Samsung will try to market the headset at a lower price than Apple’s $3,499 Vision Pro. Meta’s Quest 3 is available for just $500.
The first product of the new Android XR system:-
The headset will run on the new Android XR operating system, which is jointly developed by Google, Samsung and Qualcomm. XR is the term used for mixed- reality, virtual- reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR). The new Android XR system can be used for devices such as headsets and glasses. Samsung’s headset will be the first product to run on the XR system, allowing other companies to use the system for their devices in the future.
Won- Joon Choi, head of research and development for Samsung’s mobile division, said, “XR has gone from being a far- fetched idea to becoming a reality. We believe that XR can revolutionize everyday life.”
A direct attack on Apple and Meta:-
According to analysts, Google and Samsung are teaming up to attack Apple and Meta directly. “This partnership will leverage Google’s advanced AI capabilities and Samsung’s reliable hardware,” said Baird’s Mortenson.
The lack of success of Apple’s Vision Pro has created an opportunity for Google and Samsung to enter the market. Meta is currently considered a market leader, especially due to its collaborations with Quest 3 and Rayban. However, according to experts, headsets are still a “want” product, not a “need”.
According to Dan Ives, an expert, Google will focus on a larger consumer base by creating a product that costs less than Meta’s prices. “This is Google’s signal of strength to Big Tech companies,” he said.
AI and new opportunities:-
Google will be using its AI capabilities for the XR system. The headset will have all the benefits of the Gemini Al system launched in 2023, with AI assistants and access to all Android apps.
According to experts, this decision is important for Google, as it has previously invested in products like Google Glass and Daydream, but they did not succeed.
Prepare for future opportunities:-
According to Kessler, the big tech companies are positioning themselves to take advantage of market opportunities. “This product currently falls into the category of ‘nice to have’, but not ‘need to have,'” he said.
The mixed- reality market is still in its infancy, so the future will see a lot of experimentation and competition in the field. Big Tech companies will henceforth try to strengthen their market position through XR and AI products.
