Actor Michael Cole, best known for portraying Pete Cochran in the 1960s crime drama “The Mod Squad,” has passed away at the age of 84. His representative, Rachel Harris, confirmed that Cole “passed away peacefully” on Tuesday morning, surrounded by loved ones after leading a full and vibrant life. The cause of death has not been disclosed.
A statement from Harris remembered Cole for his warm and generous nature. Known for his wit, charm, and deep compassion, Cole brought joy to everyone he met. He was also a gifted storyteller, often sharing Hollywood anecdotes and life lessons with those around him, making them feel special.
Cole gained recognition in the late 1960s for his role on the ABC action series “The Mod Squad,” which focused on the adventures of three young undercover police officers. In the show, Cole played Pete Cochran, alongside co-stars Clarence Williams III as Linc Hayes and Peggy Lipton as Julie Barnes, who were his fellow squad members.
Cole was the final living member of “The Mod Squad” trio. Peggy Lipton passed away in May 2019 at the age of 72, and Clarence Williams III died in June 2021 at the age of 81.
“The Mod Squad,” which aired from 1968 to 1973, was a groundbreaking series known for addressing contemporary social issues like racial and social justice. Cole’s portrayal of Pete Cochran, a troubled young man who found redemption through his work on the squad, made him a fan favorite.
The show received three consecutive Golden Globe nominations for Best TV Drama from 1970 to 1972 during its five-season run. In 1979, Cole reunited with co-stars Clarence Williams III and Peggy Lipton for a TV movie titled “The Return of Mod Squad,” where they reprised their roles.
