LIV Golf, which is financed by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF), is likely to name Scott O’Neill as its new CEO, the New York Times reported in November. O’Neal was previously the CEO of the NBA’s Philadelphia 76ers.
LIV Golf’s current CEO Greg Norman, a two- time Open winner, will serve in the role from 2021. But now he has clarified that a new CEO will be appointed. In an interview with the WISH- TV channel in Indiana, Norman said, “Yes, a new CEO is coming in. There’s no doubt about it. I don’t mind that.”
Since LIV Golf started in 2022, many of the world’s top golfers have participated in the league. With the support of PIF, this league has gained huge popularity in a short span of time.
Meanwhile, in June 2023 the PGA Tour and the European- based DP World Tour announced a “framework agreement” to merge with the PIF. However, no final announcement has been made yet.
Greg Norman said, “I’ve seen LIV Golf grow from the initial model on paper to actually standing on the golf course. I’ve played a small part in it, and I’m proud of it. I’ll always be a part of this organization, even if in a small role.”
However, Norman faced huge criticism for his role. In particular, Northern Ireland’s famous golfer Rory McIlroy criticized his leadership. In 2022, McIlroy said, “This discussion needs deep leadership. Greg Norman should step aside now.” McIlroy is currently a member of the PGA Tour’s affairs committee and is monitoring ongoing negotiations with the PIF.
Although LIV Golf has been criticized since its inception, the league has brought about a huge change in golf. With Saudi Arabia’s financial backing, LIV Golf has challenged traditional golf associations. There is talk that the upcoming CEO selection could have a major impact on LIV Golf’s future.
Due to this, golf lovers have started to pay attention to what will be the changes in the leadership of LIV Golf and its global influence in the future.
