OnlyFans, the subscription-based platform known for explicit content, has quietly become accessible in China after being blocked by government censors for some time. Social media users began noticing the site was working as early as a week ago, and it was confirmed that accounts were viewable in China. GreatFire.org, an organization that tracks internet freedom in China, reported that OnlyFans was unblocked on November 29. The site has occasionally been accessible in China before, but usually for brief periods.
Beijing typically blocks access to thousands of websites, including those that host pornography, which is illegal in the country. The government enforces a strict zero-tolerance policy on sexually explicit content.
The news that OnlyFans is now accessible in China has sparked a positive reaction online. On the social media platform Weibo, some users are humorously suggesting that the government may be offering job opportunities to recent graduates facing a tough job market, with the idea that they could start selling content on the site. “Isn’t this just another way to provide employment?” one post commented.
One user on social media remarked, “This is a great company that gives creators 90% of their income! Isn’t that better than a regular job?”
In October, the unemployment rate for people aged 16-24, excluding students, was 17.1%, slightly lower than the peak in August, according to official statistics. China’s youth unemployment rate reached record highs last year before the data was revised and released using a new methodology.
While OnlyFans is primarily known for explicit content, some creators use the platform to share music or fitness videos. Additionally, last year, the site introduced a porn-free online streaming service featuring comedy and sports shows.
