Ford is recalling over 694,000 Bronco Sport and Escape vehicles due to a defect that could lead to engine fires. The issue stems from fuel injectors that may crack and leak, increasing the risk of fire if the leaked fuel comes into contact with hot engine or exhaust components.
The recall affects specific models of the 2021–2024 Bronco Sport and 2020–2022 Escape vehicles equipped with 1.5-liter engines.
The problem has been under investigation by Ford since 2022, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Previous recalls in November 2022, March 2024, and March 2025 included software updates designed to address the issue. However, Ford has continued to explore additional causes — most recently examining corrosion as a factor contributing to the cracks between April and May 2025.
The automaker found evidence of cracked fuel injectors in eight vehicles that experienced engine compartment fires. Six of those vehicles had not received the updated engine control software. No injuries have been reported in connection with the defect.
As a precaution, Ford’s field review committee recently authorized another recall to provide an updated engine control software to affected vehicles at no cost, until a permanent solution is developed.
Owners will begin receiving safety risk notifications by mail starting August 18, with a follow-up letter to come once a final remedy is available. Vehicle owners can contact Ford’s customer service at 1-866-436-7332, referencing recall number 25S76.
