Walmart is recalling around 850,000 stainless steel water bottles after reports that the lids can unexpectedly pop off with force, potentially hitting users and causing serious injuries, including permanent vision loss in two cases.

The recall involves Walmart’s “Ozark Trail 64 oz Stainless Steel Insulated Water Bottles,” which have been sold nationwide since 2017. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), these bottles pose a risk of impact and cuts. The issue arises when bottles containing food, carbonated drinks, or perishable beverages like juice or milk are opened after being stored for some time—the lid can eject forcefully.

As of the announcement, Walmart had received three injury reports from people struck in the face by the lid, with two suffering permanent eye damage. Customers are advised to stop using these bottles immediately and contact Walmart for a full refund. They can also return the bottles to any Walmart store for compensation.

Walmart emphasized that customer safety is a top priority and stated that it has worked closely with the CPSC and the product’s manufacturer to remove the bottles from stores and inform consumers.

The recalled bottles can be identified by model number 83-662, which appears on the packaging but not on the product itself. The bottles have a silver stainless steel base, a black one-piece screw-on lid, and an Ozark Trail logo on the side.
