Tropical Storm Chantal is expected to bring heavy rainfall as it moves inland over northeastern South Carolina on Sunday.
The National Hurricane Center in Miami has issued tropical storm warnings for parts of both North and South Carolina.
Early Sunday, the storm was located about 70 miles east of Charleston, South Carolina, and 85 miles southwest of Wilmington, North Carolina. Chantal’s maximum sustained winds were recorded at 50 mph, moving north at 8 mph.
Rain bands from the storm were moving ashore, raising concerns about flash flooding in the area.
Parts of North Carolina are forecast to receive heavy rain through Monday, with total rainfall amounts between 2 and 4 inches and localized areas potentially seeing up to 6 inches, increasing the risk of flash floods.
South Carolina’s Emergency Management office had earlier alerted residents about the possibility of isolated tornadoes along the coastline and minor flooding in coastal areas.
Officials also urged drivers to avoid flooded roads and to heed road closure signs to stay safe.
