The Indiana Fever have waived veteran DeWanna Bonner, granting her an unconditional release after 16 years in the league. Bonner had been absent from the team since June 12 due to personal reasons, missing five games. Since joining the Fever as a free agent in February, she averaged 7.1 points and 3.8 rebounds per game.

In a statement, Bonner expressed gratitude to the Fever organization for the opportunity but acknowledged that the fit wasn’t ideal for her at this stage in her career. She thanked the team for allowing her to move on and wished them success as they continue developing their young roster.

Bonner has consistently scored in double digits throughout her WNBA career and has been a regular starter since 2012, playing for Phoenix and Connecticut. However, with Indiana, she started only three of the nine games she appeared in. Notably, she moved into third place on the league’s all-time scoring list during the season opener.

At 37 years old, Bonner will remain on waivers for 48 hours. During this period, other teams can claim her and take on the rest of her $200,000 contract. If unclaimed, she will become an unrestricted free agent, free to sign elsewhere at the prorated veteran minimum salary.

Meanwhile, Indiana re-signed guard Aari McDonald, who impressed during her short stint on a hardship contract earlier this month. McDonald averaged 11 points, 3 assists, and 2 steals in her games with the Fever.

Fever COO and GM Amber Cox highlighted McDonald’s immediate impact, praising her style and mentality as a perfect match for the team’s vision. The organization is excited to have her back for the remainder of the season.
